| CRI or Ra band | Colour rendering meaning | Planning use | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Below 70 | Weak colour rendering | Only for non-critical utility contexts where colour judgement is not important. | Do not use as a default for occupied task areas. |
| 70-79 | Basic colour rendering | May be acceptable for simple circulation or back-of-house lighting. | Check task expectations and local requirements before relying on it. |
| 80-89 | General colour rendering | Common planning band for many residential and office tasks. | Still check glare, CCT, illuminance and surface colour. |
| 90-94 | High colour rendering | Useful for retail, food, artwork, grooming and colour-sensitive tasks. | Higher CRI can reduce efficacy; compare maintained output as well. |
| 95 and above | Very high colour rendering | Specialist colour assessment or display contexts. | Not a substitute for task-specific lighting design or measurement. |
